Why a Fridge Stops Cooling (and What We Check First)

A refrigerator that runs constantly but never gets cold is usually not a dead compressor. Nine times out of ten it is airflow, whether that is dust-packed condenser coils, a condenser fan that has seized, or a freezer evaporator buried in frost because the defrost cycle quit. All three make the same complaint, the fridge is warm and the motor never stops.
Before you call anyone, pull the unit out and look at the coils underneath or behind it. If they are grey with lint, vacuum them and give the fridge a day. In a Texas summer, a clogged condenser alone can cost you ten degrees of cooling. While you are back there, listen for the fan; silence with a warm compressor is a strong hint.
If the freezer is cold but the fresh-food side is not, the problem is almost always the air path between the two compartments, a frosted evaporator or a failed damper. That one needs a technician, because getting to it means removing the interior panel and thawing the coil properly rather than chipping at it.
One thing worth knowing: food safety comes before the repair. If the interior has been above 40°F for more than four hours, move what you can to a cooler and treat the rest as a loss. That is the reason we treat refrigerator calls as same-day work whenever the schedule allows.
